What is the Women's Initiative Program?

An educational, female mentoring program designed to foster the professionalism and career development of students in the business school. Students are introduced to successful businesswomen who act as their mentors for one academic year. Studies have shown that women who have a mentor early in their career are more likely to succeed in the business world.

What can a mentee expect from the mentor relationship?

Basically, anything. A mentor may take you to work with her, allow you to attend business meetings, introduce you to the head of her company, or exchange e-mails filled with advice for you. In addition, she may take you out to lunch, send care packages, and will definitely be a friend to you.

Who can be a mentee?

Any female undergraduate or graduate student in the business school. Please apply even if you feel you do not have a strong resume or list of accomplishments, as the program would like students of all levels to be involved.

Who can be a mentor?

Any accomplished female who has demonstrated success in not only their career, but also in service to their community. You do not have to be a graduate of the University of Alabama. Here are the minimum requirements to be a mentor:

  • Be willing to volunteer your time (1 hour a month) over a period of one academic year.
  • Be willing to assist a mentee with career plans, professional and personal growth issues that a mentee would like to discuss.
  • Be available to attend kick-off event in Tuscaloosa.
  • Have at least an undergraduate degree and working in a business field/industry.
  • Be prepared to respond in a timely fashioni to a student's calls or emails.
