My area of research is financial reporting and disclosures and firm valuation. Specifically, I focus on certain types of business activities and events (i.e., earnings and/or expectations management) used by firms to meet or beat analysts’ expectations and how these activities affect investors’ assessment of firm value. I teach Intermediate Financial Accounting and Advanced Financial Accounting to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr. Peter M. Johnson, CPA, is the Ernst and Young Fellow and an Assistant Professor of Accounting in the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Arizona State University and has a Masters Degree of Accountancy from Southern Utah University (SUU). Dr. Johnson teaches intermediate and advance financial accounting and serves as a member of the curriculum assessment committee for the School of Accountancy.
His research revolves around how earnings and expectation management are used by firms to meet or beat analysts’ expectations and how these activities effect investors’ assessment of firm value. His research has been presented at several national and international conferences and published in the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Accounting Horizon, Advances in Accounting, and the Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance.
Prior to teaching at the University of Alabama, Dr. Johnson worked in public accounting for six years and was a senior accountant for Grant Thornton LLP. He also taught at Brigham Young University and BYU-Hawaii where he was twice named the School of Business Professor of the Year and Teacher of the Year for excellent in teaching, research, and service.
Prior to his academic and professional career, Professor Johnson played NCAA Division I basketball for Southern Utah University (SUU) where he was an Academic All-American and the SUU Athlete of the Year. He was also one of eight NCAA Division I athletes in the nation to receive the Post Graduate NCAA Scholarship. It was at SUU where he met his wife Stephanie Lyn Chadwick and they are the proud parents of four children.
Professor Johnson has worked as a volunteer in several community organizations and served on the Board of Directors of the United Way Foundation and the Friends of America Foundation and was a Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America.
