Dr. Elder has published articles in journals such as Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Legal Studies, Public Choice, Public Finance Quarterly, International Review of Law and Economics, AREUEA Journal and Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Southern Economic Association, Public Choice Society, the American Law and Economics Association, the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. His academic and professional interests include determinants and effects of tax structures and economics of decision-making in court systems, especially the civil justice system and the economic effects of punitive damages, and the impact of balanced budget laws and tax limitations.
