The UA marketing major really helped me understand all aspects of business. Marketing helps in my job in many ways. I am Assistant Branch manager at AmSouth Bank. My major responsibility is to ensure that financial sales goals are being hit. The Marketing major has helped me understand how to hit those goals. I have to understand how to sell and market financial products to the community in effective ways. One important thing to understand is that many entry-level positions are in sales, even if you decide not to stay in sales, it is usually a starting point. Marketing will help prepare you for success in sales. If you understand sales and marketing, you will have a good understanding of how the business itself runs. The faculty at Alabama was a great help in my success they are all willing to help in any way that they can in the job search as well as in the learning process. The UA faculty is definitely interested in making sure that the students succeed not only in class, but also in the students’ life long career.
I am Assistant Branch manager of an AmSouth Bank Branch. I really enjoy managing the sales for my branch and teaching the sales process to others. I also enjoy coming up with new ways to market my products so that people will be interested and use the bank’s products. I enjoy being creative and thinking of fun ways to sell and market financial products. Alabama marketing has helped me understand what to think about when marketing a product to the public. You learn how to understand needs and how to meet the needs of people. I plan to move up to Branch Manager in the near future and plan to move to General Sales Manager from there. I enjoy managing the Sales process and helping others succeed in sales.

The UA Marketing major, its faculty and the program as a whole has prepared me very well for the real world. Not only is it a complete introductory packet of business principles and areas needed either to start a business or work for corporate America. The faculty is a UA's business school's best asset. The amount of wisdom and knowledge these people have is what makes us students look good out there. My best advice for the new freshmen students would be to use as much support from their teachers as possible. Use them as reference, visit them often and ask the questions and advise about your career path. Get Involved!!
I currently hold the position of Neuroscience Sales representative in Primary Care for the Miami territory, for Eli Lilly and Company. I call (visit), doctors on a day today basis in order to track the sales of my specific products and try to push them where possible. It is very challenging due to the high competition but there is where I a using my preparation from UA to try and make a difference. In a way, I run my own business, make my own hours, plan my day and plan my strategy for the territory. Fairly new at this, but learning like crazy. Even though I feel I'm going very slowly, my numbers are going up. Wonderful industry to be in and not a desk job so I like it. The only reason why I got this position was because I got involved and filled up my resume with good stuff. I think I owe it all to UA, and my efforts as well, but UA gives it all and you got to put it together.

Juan F. Perlaza (Kiko)

The faculty has a lot of experience in their areas of marketing that they teach; they are very friendly and available outside of class often. The program is well laid out and follows a logical progression. The courses kept you busy but they were fun. It was very easy to meet fellow marketing majors because it seemed as if we all had the same classes, this fostered a group working environment. The UA marketing major helped me with my career search because I knew that I was well equipped for any task that was thrown at me.
My job title is Marketing Project Specialist and I work for a company called Panduit Corp. (www.panduit.com) based out of Tinley Park, IL. I work at their manufacturing branch in Georgia. My day to day tasks include all of the following, creation of marketing collateral (advertisements, product bulletins, catalogs, sample bags, etc.), maintain website content for my product groups (add/update products, marketing collateral), participate in the new product launch process, also use my computer science minor for a little graphic design and flash animation work. I would be more than happy to provide some examples of things that I have created or helped create. My career path looks pretty good so far, I will continue to work full time at my current position and am starting to work on my MBA in Marketing at GA State University part time. I hope to work my way up in my division as it grows over the next 5-10 years and then move into our corporate marketing department. My advice to the new marketing majors, work hard, get all that you can out of every class (don't worry TOO much about grades), join and participate in clubs, societies, etc., and build connections with your fellow students, professors and businesses that come to present or recruit on campus.

The best part of the UA marketing major is definitely the faculty. The teachers in the department are the main reason I chose marketing. Also by being enrolled in the marketing program, you learn how to manage; basically you get the best of both worlds. Another interesting point about the marketing major is its always evolving and that is represented well in the classroom, by real time situations, events and presentations.

Being a marketing major at Alabama really helped me get to where I am today in my career. I could not have done it without the help of the faculty. They were, and still are, some of the most influential people in helping me choose my career path. They were always willing to help me outside of class and were always easily accessible. Picking marketing as my major helped teach me the importance of teamwork and how imperative it is to communicate with each other. With my current job, I found myself well prepared to work with others and well prepared on how to give presentations. Giving presentations is a part of my job and without knowing how to properly give one would never have gotten me to where I am today.
I currently work for CPSI (Computer Programs and Systems Inc.) in Mobile, AL. I am a Support Rep for the Electronic Billing and Outsourcing department. I am constantly working with other members of my team to help resolve problems. Even though I do not make presentations in person, I am continuously giving presentations to customers on the web while on conference call with them. I help promote CPSI every time I am on the phone with one of our customers by giving them excellent customer service and doing my best to help resolve their problem.

During my time in the marketing program, I really appreciated the attention and dedication of my professors. I always felt at ease going to them for help and they were always willing to assist with any questions I had. It was evident that they were all very experienced and knowledgeable about marketing and still interested in learning more about their field.
Working with my classmates on projects and assignments was also a positive experience. My class was very diverse in ages, experience levels, and even nationalities, which exposed me to many different perspectives. I received invaluable experience working with real companies such as Mellow Mushroom and Carlson Marketing Group. Also beneficial was putting marketing concepts into practice, such as focus groups, demographic studies, web surveys and marketing analyses.
I am very happy that I chose to get my masters degree in marketing from UA. It has proven very beneficial for me in my job search because of the value of a masters degree paired with the excellent reputation of UA’s business school. Even now that I am employed, my education gives me an advantage when being considered for other positions.
I am a Marketing Assistant in Corporate Marketing at Alabama Power. More specifically, I work in the Mass Marketing and Sales Support department. Some of my responsibilities include:
*Administer in-house direct mail campaigns involving letters to residential and commercial customers
*Create and edit sales material such as brochures and flyers for use at trade shows, and newsletters targeted to specific commercial and industrial customer groups
*Coordinate special events (cultural, athletic, etc.) and sales meetings/trips for electric dealers, builders who use electric in new construction, and other businesses with whom Alabama Power has business relationships. This includes handling registration, scheduling activities, and creating communications materials (invitations, agendas, signage, etc.)
*Maintain a database of information about customers who attend events throughout the year. I run reports at year-end for managers to use in event planning for the following year.
I really enjoy my job. My department is wide-ranging in the people we deal with and the types of responsibilities we have. I support other areas within marketing as well as external customers, so I serve all types of people. Also, a typical week could include planning a seminar, coordinating a mail campaign, and compiling reports of event attendees, which helps keep things varied and interesting.
My career path will be changing in about a month when I begin the Marketing Specialist Development Program at Alabama Power. The program is designed to give me the opportunity to learn about many aspects of the business, learn what others’ roles and responsibilities are, and participate in special projects. Over a 12-month period, I will rotate to different departments, including residential and commercial marketing, market planning, sales development, rates, products and services, power delivery and customer service. At the end of the program, I will be assigned to an area in marketing.

The UA marketing department definitely prepared me for the real world. The marketing program is put together in a way that I believe exposes you to all aspects of marketing. I think as a new marketing student I was not aware of all of the different types and fields of marketing that were actually out there. The faculty helped me to realize the jobs available and at the same time taught me exactly what I needed to know to obtain the job I wanted. I always felt that my professors knew EVERYTHING and they were always there when I needed them to be.
I now work for Molton, Allen & Williams. We are an Insurance Agency which means we are the middle man between a carrier and a client. I actually write/market commercial insurance. For example, a client like Golden Flake Enterprises would call on me to take their business to different insurance markets to find the one that could provide them with the best insurance for their company at the best price. My title right now is Account Manager and I currently handle 221 accounts in my department. I am looking forward to moving to our Marketing department full time which would mean I only market for accounts instead of marketing them having to service the client as well.
The thing I want other UA students to know is that everyone in my industry knows about The University of Alabama and they know the reputation its Business School and Marketing Department holds. Sometimes all I have to say is I graduated from UA and the business school and I am through the door so to speak.

After graduating with a Marketing degree from UA I felt very prepared as I entered into the workforce. Taking classes within the marketing department at UA not only helped with my job search but my actual job performance. The faculty had such enthusiasm about what they were teaching you couldn’t help but want to learn more about the many facets of marketing. The dedication of the faculty and staff made the time I spent earning my marketing degree very rewarding.
I graduated in August of last year, took a couple of months off and began working as a Marketing Associate at an insurance firm in October of 2005. I came into the company with a fresh outlook although having no experience with insurance I was a bit intimidated. I quickly found that I was fully prepared to take on the job that I was had accepted and since last October I have been promoted twice. When I came into my company, NationsBuilders Insurance Services (NBIS,) there was not a strong brand awareness that was associated with our company and/or product. Since I started with the company I have been able to do everything from creating a marketing plan/strategic marketing, market research, re-branding and now penetrating the market. I can honestly say that I have been so successful within this company due to the preparation from my marketing classes and I feel secure that I have found a career path not only a job.

My experience as a student in the Marketing program at Alabama was excellent. The business program at the U of A is nationally recognized and my employer was looking for someone from with a marketing background. The facilities are state of the art, but more importantly, the faculty was what made the Marketing program so beneficial. Specifically, Dr. Richey, Dr. Allaway, Dr. Ellinger, and Dr. Franke. I believe that the marketing department does a great job of preparing students for a broad range of industries and occupations.
Here are just a few of the benefits I relieved from my classes and Professors:
-Understanding the client, "putting yourself in the buyer’s shoes".
-Developing the "team" concept in working with other students toward a common goal.
-The importance of relationships in the business environment and strategies to build those relationships.
-The faculty helped me build confidence in; Public Speaking, Preparation for a message and executing the message, and the ability to forecast changes in the marketplace.
My Marketing degree prepared me for all phases of business process, which enables me to understand the value of each department in my company.
Also, it was obvious to me that you and the other marketing professors had a passion for your respective subjects. I remember my professors being enthusiastic about selling, advertising, supply chain, or whatever the division was. It was a lot easier to come to class and participate, when you know your Professor has a sincere interest in their topic and your success as an individual. As mentioned, I sincerely felt the marketing staff wanted to see me succeed. They helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses and were there for me when I needed a letter of recommendation.
I am a group sales representative for The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. I sell employee benefits through an Independent Broker/Insurance Agent. Guardian's target market is companies with 15-1000 employees. I consult with Independent Insurance agents and try to develop insurance packages that fit their client’s needs. I am like a wholesaler, and the Broker/Agent is like the retailer. Developing relationships and problem solving are extremely important in my industry. Hence, I spend a lot of time meeting with brokers and developing my product knowledge.
A typical day for me consists of taking people out to breakfast and Lunch, delivering proposals, and accompanying a broker on employer and employee presentations. My job is essentially to make the broker look good. I have about two hundred agents in the middle Tennessee area, so staying busy is not a problem. I spend a lot of time mediating with underwriters, staff, and brokers. The group insurance market is very competitive, between Guardian and other carriers like; Met-life, Unum Provident, Delta Dental, and Blue Cross. Also, my brokers are constantly in competition with other Agents who are trying to get their group business.
I love my job because of the respect of this position, Guardian's corporate culture, the freedom, the opportunity to meet and work with new people, the challenge, and the competitiveness. Plus, the money's not too bad.
This year I have attended Value Selling Essentials at The Russ Berrie Institute and Consultative Selling Skills hosted by the Baron Group. These two courses were a great follow up to my Marketing classes at the UofA. I felt a step ahead of the other reps from around the country, primarily because of my undergrad at Alabama.

People looking for a talented young employee want someone who can solve all types of problems - big and small. I feel like the marketing program at Alabama gave me an edge. My professors challenged me academically, and gave me the confidence I needed to make sound decisions using techniques that can be applied in nearly any situation. The program also gave me the confidence to pursue a law degree.
Being a marketing major at Alabama gave me a different outlook than most of the people in my business. I learned to be analytical without ever losing sight of the big picture. The faculty in the marketing department is continually reinforcing this idea by encouraging creative thinking, but never at the expense of sound decisions grounded in fact. The mixture of lecture and interactive projects in the classroom made lessons seem more relevant, and it made class more interesting. The teamwork and out-of-class effort required is tough. The facilities and learning environment are as good as anyone's.
I am the assistant editor for a sports magazine and web site owned by Fox Interactive Media, part of Fox News, Inc. My day-to-day activities can include anything from writing or editing stories, promoting my magazine and web site, making advertising sales calls, or talking with a coach for the inside scoop about the team. My job is not a nine-to-five gig; it's closer to 24 hours a day. On a big week, I might be interviewed 20 or more times on various radio stations, which helps promote our business. I have also had the opportunity for guest-hosting radio shows, making television appearances, and doing other freelance work, including hosting online chat focus groups and writing a script for a television series documentary on Alabama football.
I wear many hats, and my job is not one that a person can go to school and learn how to do. Success in my business is gained only by properly analyzing a situation and using good judgment to make the correct decision, time and time again. To many people it sounds odd that I was a marketing major at the University of Alabama and am working in a journalistic field, but no education could have been more fitting for the job.

The marketing program at Alabama is second to none. I use the skills that I learned at UA everyday. My marketing professors were ready and willing to assist me any way they could and it was very evident from day one that they were truly concerned with my and my classmates success. The curriculum is varied and challenging consisting of lecture and many group projects which teaches skills used in the real world everyday.
It is my firm belief that the my receiving a degree in marketing form the University of Alabama has afforded me many advantages that I would not have otherwise had. My degree is not just another piece of paper in the “real world”. A marketing degree form UA is admired and well respected.
I enjoyed the challenge and excitement of the marketing program so much that I decided to return for my masters in Marketing. My marketing professors not only offered support in and out of the classroom, but also played a key role in my getting a great job. I am now working for as a Marketing Representative for a very well known and respected commercial insurance company. I am in the field everyday working in a rewarding job were I know that I am helping my customers and the companies they own to achieve a piece of mind and level of financial security that is unparalleled in their industry. When beginning my career it was immediately apparent that I was strides ahead of many of my peers and I contribute this to everything that I learned while working on marketing degree at the University of Alabama. It is my opinion that this is the best opportunity out there and my only regret is that I cannot go back and do it again.

A few things I would say about the marketing major is that: It is by far the best major and is flexible with a job search. There are plenty of opportunities with a marketing degree. You can work for a marketing department or you can apply it to personal selling.
I started with a business management degree. I knew that would be too broad and may not help so much with finding a good job. Then, I changed my major to Accounting because I was always good with math growing up. Then, I discovered that Accounting had nothing to do with math. I was always stressed. I knew I liked selling things (been working at Cingular for 6 years). So, that's when I decided to change my major to marketing. After that, my grades improved because that is something I could relate to in my current job. Life became a lot less stressful. The marketing staff seems to know a lot more about how school work relates to the real world. That is the best thing faculty can do for students. I really enjoyed the last day of your class with the short term and long term goals. I like to look back at that stuff to see where I am now and how much I've accomplished.
The marketing faculty seemed to care about each individual student. Other professors just liked to show off their skills and knowledge. They didn't act like they cared.

I am so thankful for the experience that I obtained through my years in the UA marketing programs. While I was an undergraduate marketing major I was fortunate enough to work closely with my professors during an internship with the INS. This, as well as my challenging coursework gave me the edge I needed to get my first job quickly after graduation!
When I decided to return to UA to further my education, I referred back to these professors and they helped place me in the program and internship that was best for me! I decided on the Masters of Marketing program to fast track myself back into the real world.
When I graduated I was offered jobs with top companies such as Universal Studios but I decided on a Database and Market Analyst position with Playground Destination Properties. I am currently the youngest analyst with Playground. My company does sales and marketing for resorts all over the world and I work at a resort that is currently being developed in Panama City Beach, Florida. The industry is fascinating and you can't beat going in to work at a resort on the beach every day! I am looking forward to a long career with Playground, possibly moving into a Corporate Analyst or Trainer position in the future.

Your incentive for picking the right University is based on your hopes of finding the best job. It starts with the process of filling out applications and sending out resumes, but what separates you from all the others applicants on a H/R manager’s desk is not necessarily your grades but what you gained from your experiences along the way. Here at the University of Alabama the Marketing Program provides you with more than just a marketing degree; it equips you with the knowledge and experiences that translates into success. A marketing degree from the University of Alabama is a competitive advantage when job hunting in Corporate America don’t be fooled by imitations.”

I am President of the K1 Corporation a company I started in August of 2005. Our company fits in the ideology of Corporate America about as well as the red headed step child. We identify potential business opportunities based on the strengths and existing conditions of third world countries. Our primary goal is not only to produce a profit but also to correct or assist with social problems in a responsible manner.
Our only current project is Premium Fashion uniforms/scrubs for medical schools. (No sweetshops here). This is why I am back in the states as of now, is to show my samples and gather customers.
What I do on a day to day basis is hard to explain because it is not consistent yet. I have been taking independent contracts for a range of projects aside from running the K1 Corporation to get a broader experience base. I have a contract to do audio tours for a company in California that will be available on pod casts in Q1 of 2007. This is not released yet so I can’t really discuss it further. I also do work with small and medium size companies in Peru in a various fields such as marketing and exporting. That’s a lot of fun and has serious growth potential.
Believe it or not I am still not finished; I am a founding member of the only English speaking Rotary Club International in all of South America. The Rotary Club Lima Sunrise District 4450. I am the master of ceremonies and conduct the meetings as well as assist the board with Public Relations.
I spend a lot of my time volunteering with this non profit as well as others (i.e. Ver Para Aprender www.verparaaprender.com) that include projects dealing from water and food to health city development. The key word to my efforts is focusing on projects and assisting non profits that understand “sustainable development”.
I better give you this first and let you to me if it interest you and if it’s on the right track or what direction you would prefer me to report more to you in.

Marketing at The University of Alabama trained me to think critically about the many inputs that build a strong marketing program for a product or service. When I went to work at Procter and Gamble, I had strong marketing fundamentals that set me up for success when bringing my work to the table for the Swiffer and Mr. Clean franchises.
The faculty genuinely cares about seeing students succeed. While challenging, the curriculum is very pragmatic, allowing students to analyze case information and best-in-class examples of strong marketing in today’s marketplace. The integration of technology and innovative approaches to information delivery from the faculty show their true commitment to preparing students for success in a fast-paced global marketplace.
I worked as a summer intern in the Consumer and Market Knowledge function for the Home Care Global Business Unit at The Procter and Gamble Company. I brought insights to the Surface Care marketing team on the emerging green cleaning market and consumer insights for the Swiffer brand. I enjoyed the work because it allowed me to bring project management and problem solving skills to the forefront of my recommendations that would impact the bottom line. I am interested in pursuing management consulting and utilizing the skills learned at P&G across different businesses and industries.

The UA Marketing program was great because it encompassed all the angles of Marketing. I was able to learn about selling, promotional advertising, E-commerce, strategy, and all the necessary marketing concepts which helped me to decide exactly what I wanted to do once I graduated. Each class blends into another, so you are constantly building upon your knowledge of Marketing. Every class required at least one presentation, yes I know most people don’t like them, but they are the best learning tools for the real world. Presentations help you to learn to take responsibility for what you say (especially in Dr. Richey’s class because the audience drills you with questions!) and helps you get over stage fright. I am constantly asked for my opinion and have to answer for what I say and do.
Marketing majors have more fun. We don’t have to crunch numbers or deal with managing people; we get to create, persuade, and be unique. There is no set way to sell, design, or promote; Marketing people appreciate a sense of autonomy.
My official job title is Marketing Assistant, but I do so much more. I am the Marketing / IT / Show Coordinator / Website Administrator of my company. I work for a small-family style rep agency, Sales Group South, representing 41 different hardware lines ranging from GE light bulbs to Elmer’s glue. We are the South’s largest electrical and plumbing rep agency.
Day to day I maintain our company website, salesgroupsouth.com, and create promotional flyers for our salesmen to carry with them. Twice a year we have two big Dealer Market Shows that I help to plan. Planning includes setting up the displays (called plan-o-grams), ordering samples, creating flyers, contacting factories, and I also work at the shows selling our products.
I love Marketing because I’m not stuck doing one job and I can use my creativity. In the future I hope to own my own wedding planning business or become a special events coordinator for a large company.

When beginning my college career at the University of Alabama the decision of what major I was going to choose was not difficult. With a nationally ranked business school and a top notch marketing department where could I go wrong? With a marketing degree from UA your career opportunities are endless. You are able to go into any job field you want since everyone needs marketing to keep their companies competitive. No matter what area of marketing you want to go into the UA marketing program gives you a variety of classes to choose from. The UA marketing program wants everyone to succeed and will help you in anyway you need to get that accomplished.
The marketing faculty at UA is one of the best in the country. The professors teach you things not only from the book but from their real life situations that you can apply and use in your future career. They make it a point to get to know their students and are very involved in their college career. In their classroom you are not just one of the bunch. They make sure that each and every student gets individual attention to make sure your college needs are met. They challenge you to think outside the box. The professors always go over and above to help you with class work or if you just want to come to their office to chat.
After graduating from UA with a degree in Marketing my career opportunities were endless. Right now I am the marketing manager for a new technology RFID company in Atlanta Georgia. My day consists of putting our companies name and products out into the public eye which involves creating press releases, customizing product literature, working on trade shows, and dealing with the media among other things.
With a marketing degree from the University of Alabama you have world at your feet. With a marketing job it is always interesting and is always changing which makes it fun.
I am looking to take my experiences I have learned and use it in the sports field with a sports agency or professional football team.

First, some positive things about the the UA marketing major is that the constant interaction with professionals from the industry and "real-world" consulting projects provided invaluable experience and networking opportunities. The UA marketing and supply chain faculty come from diverse backgrounds which presents different perspectives and outlooks in the classroom. The faculty also has a great deal of contacts in the industry to provide speakers to talk to the students about the market, specific experiences, jobs and companies. All of these chances to work with and meet industry professionals provided a network and was a great place to start when looking for a job.
This all provided me with the skills and background necessary to start out in a high responsibility and leadership position straight out of college.
Second, my job now is with Aldi Foods. I am a District Manager, which is a mid-level executive position with the company. The U.S. home office is in Batavia, IL, and we are aggressively expanding into AL, FL, GA, and out west towards TX.
Right now I am in a year long training phase, which is part in-store merchandising and operations training and part District Manager training which teaches you how to manage the store operations and assure that your district of stores is staying extraordinarily efficient.
My job description is being the liaison between the company directors and store management personnel. My job consists of aligning my stores strategy and operations with corporate guidelines and objectives. One of the main factors of my job is the delegation of responsibility. Once delegated, it must be supervised, evaluated and reinforced if necessary. Another cool part of my job is having the ability to hire and fire people straight out of college. With that comes alot of responsibility which is why my job consists of continuous training. Besides the daily activities, some of the perks are nice too; i.e. company car, credit card. As far as my career path down the road, a promotion will result in becoming one of several directors for a division. There are real estate, operations, warehouse, administrative, and purchasing directors.
