Seminars
The University of Alabama has two additional programs aimed specifically at Ph.D. students: Our Excellence in Teaching Program and our Research Workshop Series.
Excellence in Teaching
This program is aimed at providing the student with all the skills necessary to become an accomplished marketing instructor. First, we have monthly seminars in teaching excellence, given by our departmental faculty, visiting scholars, or other relevant parties. These seminars are focused on specific topics in teaching, such as case teaching, simulation teaching, experimental methods in teaching, or various policy issues.
Second, the new instructor is teamed with a faculty mentor who works with that individual for a minimum of one year. During that year the faculty mentor is responsible for attending at least one class per semester and critiquing the student’s teaching. The mentor is also available for advice throughout the year. The Provost/Academic Vice President selected the department as the University nominee for the Theodore Hesberg Award based on this program.
Research Workship Series
This program brings three to five accomplished scholars to campus each year for a one day visit. During the scholar’s visit s/he gives one formal academic presentation and one informal discussion aimed primarily at career management of publishing issues, although some have addressed teaching issues as well. Some of these scholars are recent Alabama graduates, while others are well established, distinguished academics in the field. Click here for a list of past research seminar guests.
