How to Get the Most Out of Mentoring

Computer Science Mentoring is a student run program that provides assistance and resources to students in CS 114, 124, and 325 classes each semester and during the summer terms. MIS students who have completed these classes act as mentors whom instruct and guide current students in the fundamentals of these classes. Mentoring secessions for a particular class are held from 2 to 4 days a week for an hour each day, though mentors often stay longer when needed or if there is a large crowd. While mentors are not directly affiliated with the CS department, however they do communicate with the CS faculty to tailor the program to their requests and suggestions.

Better programs, leaders, instructions, problem-solvers and communicators are created through the mentoring program each semester making it an important aspect of the professional and education careers of all involved students. Not only are mentors giving back to their fellow students through mentoring, they are also perfecting their own computer science skills as well as learning valuable traits such as giving clear instruction, managing time and people, working with others, and communication. These are skills that are essential to any business professional, but are often not taught in the classroom. Because of this, participation in such activities as mentoring allows a student to become more well-rounded and skilled in these areas.

Goals:
- Provide a resource to students in Computer Science classes to assist them with their programming, problem solving, algorithm, and technical skills.
- Encourage students to give back to future generations of students and to help those mentors grow their own instructional, programming related, managerial, and interpersonal skills.
- Recruit and retain students in the MIS program by providing them with class assistance and introducing them to upper classmen and faculty.
