Supported by federal, state, corporate, and private funding, the MIS faculty is engaged in an active research program focused on closing the digital divide. IT-WoRCs is a higher education consortium comprised of The University of Alabama, Alabama State University and Bishop State Community College.
"Its purpose is not only to assist in the recruitment of minority students into the information technology field, but also to enable the State's flagship MIS program to provide assistance to community colleges and high schools on the matter of curriculum and teacher training."
This is the first formal higher education consortium in the state that comprises a research university, a historically black college, and a community college. IT-WoRCs programs:
- encourage young Alabamians to stay in school and pursue studies at the community college and university level;
- provide effective professional development initiatives for classroom teachers to encourage the growth and development of programs;
- create a partnership with Alabama business and the education system;
- provide innovative and effective instructional programs enabling students to be competitive in modern, information technology-driven businesses;
- inform Alabama guidance counselors of the need for information technology education; and
- explore with key partners the creation of an agenda that will substantially improve Alabama information technology education.
Currently, the MIS faculty is engaged in a nationwide study to determine the effectiveness of private and public initiatives aimed at closing the digital divide.
