The purpose for the exam is threefold. First it encourages students to integrate and apply the information learned during their doctoral studies from a methodological standpoint. Second the exam provides a vehicle for the faculty to ensure that students have made satisfactory progress in their program. Third, the exam tests students overall mastery of knowledge in their chosen managerial discipline. Each student is required to pass one written comprehensive exam, which takes place at the end of their second year in the program. This examination requires students to demonstrate a mastery of knowledge in their chosen managerial discipline as well as expertise in research methodology. Once students have completed all coursework and passed their comprehensive exam successfully, they can begin dissertation work. It is generally expected that students will complete all degree requirements within about four years.
