Courses

Specific courses in the proposed actuarial curriculum include:

Calculus pre/co-requisites:

Verification of Educational Equivalent (VEE):

  • VEE Applied Statistical Methods (two required courses):
  •
    1. Economics 413.  Forecasting
    2. Economics 552.  Applied Regression Analysis.   This is a stop-gap measure as it applies to undergraduate students.  EC 552 has already been approved by CAS/SOA (as have some other graduate courses) and undergraduates can petition to take it.  However, the Actuarial Science Program will submit ST 451 Statistical Methods for Research II and there is a high level of confidence that it will also be approved.  Once it is approved, it will become the normal route for undergraduates to take, as opposed to petitioning for a graduate course.
  • VEE Corporation Finance (two required courses):
  • VEE Economics (two required courses):

Preliminary Actuarial Examinations:

  • Financial Mathematics (Exam FM).  Two courses are required for adequate preparation.
  • Probability (Exam P).  Two courses required for adequate preparation.
  •
    1. Statistics 454.  Concepts of Probability.  Or Mathematics 355. Theory of Probability. (Note: it is possible that ST 454 can be amended slightly to include the relevant topics from ST 455 [see below], thus saving students three hours that can be applied elsewhere.)
    2. Statistics 455.  Statistical Inference.  Or Mathematics 451.  Mathematical Statistics With Applications I.
  • New 1 hour course: Problem Solving Lab
