First Semester
- MGT 598 Philosophy of Science
Builds skills in the design, conduct, and critical evaluation of social science research as it applies to issues relevant to organizational life. In addition to a broad knowledge on scientific method and theory, students will be introduced to the various types of research methods available to them for conducting empirical studies.
- MGT 610 Introduction to Management Thinking
Provides multiple perspectives on management thinking, from scientific to stakeholder to critical management. The course lays a foundation for future work in organizational studies, MIS, entrepreneurship, and strategy.
- EC 509 Macroeconomic Theory/Policy
An economics course is required by the college of all Ph.D. students.
- ST 550 Statistical Methods in Research I
The first statistics class in a four-course sequence.

Second Semester
- MGT 620 Micro Systems
Provides students with a framework for understanding individual behaviors, perceptions, and attitudes relevant for organizational performance.
- MGT 623 Macro Systems
Looks at the environment and its impact on organizations, and provides students with models for understanding these issues.
- MKT 674 Multivariate Methods
Provides students with information about measurement theory and how it is applied in scientific research.
- ST 551 Statistical Methods in Research II
The second class in a four-course sequence.

Concentration Area
Health Care Management (Choose two courses)
- HCM 575/675 Advanced Managed Health Care
Examines the principles and concepts of managed care for health organizations, from physician practices to hospitals and health care systems, with an emphasis on understanding the business philosophy and practices of managed care organizations.
- HCM 576/676 Advanced Long Term Care
Examines the basic and advanced concepts of long-term care organizations and management, with an emphasis on understanding the current delivery system and the unique challenges faced by practitioners on varying levels.
- HCM 577/677 Advanced Ambulatory Care
Examines the principles and concepts of ambulatory care in the health care sector, with an emphasis on understanding the business philosophy and practices of ambulatory organizations.
- HCM 591/691 Independent Study in Health Care Management
Faculty-sponsored empirical research project course. (This course may be fulfilled in the other chosen concentration area.)
